Anchan is a classic Thai restaurant that has been well-established in Chiang Mai for quite a number of years. It is situated on Nimmaehmin Soi 12 and when you enter you will see the sign for Anchan almost immediately on the left hand side of the road. You will need to walk upstairs to get to the restaurant.
It’s a small, cute place that is a nice place to sit. There isn’t a lot of seating but it isn’t too busy or too cramped. You can even take one of the open window seats and look right down on to the street below which is a feature we like.
The food is all Thai food and it’s all made to order. So even though this is a Thai restaurant the clientele are mostly all western people. The food is mostly all vegan but there are a few dishes that contain eggs. They often have a dessert on offer which tends to be vegan. They have quite a good selection of drinks and we particularly like their anchan juice. The added anchan to certain dishes give this restaurant a unique touch.
Although the dishes are pretty tasty we find the menu leaves us a bit uninspired. When we visit a Thai restaurant, we expect to see dishes that we haven’t heard of haven’t tried before rather than just the usual curries and fried rice and noodle dishes that we can get almost anywhere. We feel that their menu is lacking some creativity since they seem to still be offering the same dishes that they’re been offering since they opened years ago. The menu changes weekly but the dishes don’t differ much and there are still only around eight vegan dishes to choose from. The prices are also a little steep for Thai food, their tight on their rice portions and they don’t provide free water like all the other veggie restaurants do.
However, people will like the venue with it’s romantic atmosphere. The kitchen is also right there in the restaurant so you can see the food being cooked while you are there. It will make a nice night for a special occasion although if you come here regularly you might find yourself always eating the same dishes.
