Like many other businesses in Chiang Mai, vegetarian restaurants can pop down, just as easily as they can pop up. Aum, however is one of Chiang Mai’s oldest and most well established vegetarian restaurants. I can remember it from when I first came here a decade ago and it hadn’t changed much since. Recently however, they were forced to move to a new location and I was pleased to see that despite this everything seems to have remained the same.
The old location was situated right on Thapae Gate and the new location is just past the Saturday market. It’s slightly less rustic which I think makes it a bit more pleasant as a place to sit.
It is a very homely, cute and fairly basic place with an upstairs sitting area, be prepared to sit on floor cushions and remove your shoes. There is also a downstairs area with tables. Upstairs is nice because you can sit out the front and look outside.
There is a pretty large menu with mostly Thai food but also western food, and we have found the Thai food to be better than the latter, with some interesting traditional Thai food that is a bit more exciting than what you see on a normal menu, such as fried pumpkin with mushrooms and tempeh. Tempeh can be added to any meal for 30 baht extra, as a fan of tempeh I thought this was a nice touch. There are plenty of healthy options here as they have things like steamed sweet potato or steamed tofu. We really appreciate the non-fried options.
We were also pleased to see a range of vegan and vegetarian sushi on offer in the menu, we are always looking for that something that is a little bit different. There is also a range of tempting fruit shakes and healthy juices, plus beer.
Aum have clearly been doing it right for years, go enjoy it while they continue to do so.
