Happy Green is quite a unique vegetarian restaurant that is situated in the South of the city on the Ping River. What definitely makes this place popular is the buffet which is offered during lunch from 11.00 AM until 2:00 PM and then again in the evening from around 5:00 PM until the food runs out or they close. Cost is 140 BAHT and you can go up as many times as you want. The buffet includes a mix of Thai dishes as well as whole food dishes such as plain steamed pumpkin or potatoes. This makes it particularly popular with the high-carb low-fat crowd because it is very easy to eat healthily without oil for a cheap price. They also have a menu that you can order from at any time if the day. The food is Thai and Northern Thai with a few interesting western twists in there as well such as raw gazpacho soup. The portion sizes are generous and they serve up an amazing huge plate of somtam.
The buffet food is all vegan and although it is not indicated in the menu, they will offer you eggs to have with some meals, such as Pad Thai. This is a bit disappointing for us as they explicitly claim to be a vegan restaurant. They do also occasionally offer non-vegan milks as well such as goats milk. So that is why they are not in the vegan section of the directory.
The kitchen is all open right in the middle of the restaurant. They also have a produce section with fresh fruit and vegetables available for purchase as well as soya milk, almond milk and more. They often have homemade vegan and raw vegan desserts available (but not every day.) The restaurant is very large and quite rustic in a tranquil setting overlooking the river and their vegetable garden, which is where most of their ingredients come from, as well as their own organic farm in Lampang. The service is not always efficient, however the staff are always so lovely I find it all adds to the charm.
They are also one of the most environmentally friendly restaurants I have found. All of their food is organic and they also use organic cleaning products. They try to use as little plastic as possible and do not even use straws. If you want to take away your food please bring your own tupperware and they will give you extra or a price reduction. Rewards for saving our earth – we love it.
Happy Green still remains to be completely unpretentious as they are not trying to be anything in particular. It’s basic, plain but genuine and the food is unique and delicious and the portion servings are generous. Khun Ae is a wonderful chef and wonderful host. With the river setting, this is a nice place to sit and while away an afternoon.
