Ming Kwan is one of the most famous, classic, Thai style vegetarian restaurants in Chiang Mai. You can find listings and reviews of here quite easily on the Internet. The reasons for this are probably because of it’s ideal location in the old city right opposite Wat Pra Singh and within the Sunday night market, making it certain to attract a lot of traffic from both tourists and locals who are shopping in the night market or visiting the temple. It’s also been in this same spot since as long as we can remember.
The range of food is good although it is the typical Thai cuisine I have found a few interesting dishes. As well as the buffet dishes served out in trays they also have big pots of dishes kept warm such as delicious khao soy or guay jiaw. They also have a little somtam stall at the front which is quite unusual for one of these local places. Food is sold very cheap. Even when I have been there quite late, there have been a fair few dishes left to choose from. Even though it’s a fairly small shop, they do have a good selection. There is an inside seating area and you can find both tourists and locals here.
It is a great cheap spot and sometimes you can find a few little interesting packaged things such as desserts, juices and snacks. You might even sometimes find some salad but it’s otherwise quite hard to eat healthy here since almost everything is fried.
The restaurant is open a little later than the other Thai style ones, until 7:00 PM.
All the hot dishes should be vegan but you might just need to check about the packaged goods.
