It’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow! Where will you be taking your loved one?! Want somewhere special? Here are my 5 recommendations of vegan and vegan-friendly venues which are perfect for a romantic evening. (As these are not in order of preference I have listed them alphabetically.) All of these restaurants are open until 10PM at night or later, which is unusual for vegan places in Chiang Mai.
Goodsouls – Chang Moi Rd
(Fully vegan)
As you probably know, the ever popular Goodsouls opened a new branch in Jan 2020. Your date will be immediately impressed by the interior. Inside is spacious and loungey and there is also a charming garden out the back. On the menu there is a large array of unique and creative plant-based dishes. A kale and pesto burger, raw lasagne, falafel and tomato curry and a golden breakfast bowl are just a few of the examples. Of course there are desserts too.
If all this wasn’t enough, on the second floor you will find a retro style designed bar with cocktails and craft beers. Why not treat your date to an extremely rare white russian with plant-based whipped cream? Or, if you want things to get really ‘hot’, offer your date the signature ‘fire’ cocktail which I am told has a very spicy kick.
You can sit upstairs and people watch down below or gaze in to each others eyes until midnight.
Moreganic
(Vegan and vegetarian)
If you’re looking to really impress, Moreganic has a sophisticated fine-dining feel to it which is quite unique from any other veggie restaurant in Chiang Mai. There are mirrors and all sorts of fancy features such as low hanging lights and paintings on the walls. The waiters will open the doors for you and lay a napkin out on your lap for you. It is a very quiet place making it perfect for a date night. The food is very nicely presented and the dishes are good but be warned that all of this obviously comes at a price that is higher than average. Be aware that no alcohol is served here. Our favourite dish here is the Khao Soi.
Moreganic are also currently offering a vegan Valentine’s set menu. See their Facebook page for more details!
Reform Kafe (Temporarily Closed)
(Fully vegan)
This restaurant is attached to Green Tiger Guest House and is owned by the same owners of both branches of Goodsouls.
This lovely restaurant has a dining area arranged with comfy cushions, tablecloths and placemats. The décor is colourful and cosy with a garden section with plenty of plants and lanterns. The tables are all fairly spread out so you can whisper sweet nothings to each other without anyone over hearing. The dishes are of course fantastic with a range to suit all tastes including Thai dishes and western not forgetting their famous mushroom burger. Many dishes are perfect for sharing. They also sell alcohol including beer and wine. It certainly has a very romantic feel to it so will be perfect for you and your date.
Rustic and Blue
(Vegan-friendly)
Rustic and Blue is a modern and trendy style restaurant off of Nimmahemin. They have a number of vegan dishes marked on the menu. Many of these are great for sharing such as the vegan cheese nachos. This is certainly not a cheap place but the dishes are very tasty and high quality as well as generous in size. They also have a number of interesting vegan desserts including a raw vegan cheesecake. For drinking you will find craft beers and unusual wines.
The inside eating area is quite small but the outside garden area is lovely and candle-lit at night. We think this makes a great place for a Valentine’s Day meal.
Why Not is an Italian restaurant off of Nimmahemin. They do not explicitly advertise vegan dishes but if you request it they can make many dishes vegan such as penne arrabatia or vegetarian (vegan) pizza without cheese. This is actually our favourite place for a vegan cheeseless pizza, especially as you can pick from a list of veggie toppings.
The restaurant itself has an inside area and a very large garden area which is candle-lit and covered in case it rains. It has a classy and romantic feel to it and should be very popular for Valentine’s Day.
