I’m personally particularly partial to getting a vegan pancake in a restaurant in Chiang Mai for the simple reason that I am absolutely hopeless at making them. I have tried countless times and even bought a special silicon tray that is supposed to act as a mould (or something!) but they still always turn out as one big hot mess. If anyone is willing to come to my house and demonstrate how to cook these things I’d be extremely grateful!
Luckily, I need not worry as there are so many places in Chiang Mai that are offering vegan pancakes all varying in texture, shape, flavour, sauces etc. We have so many to choose from. Here are my faves and my reasons why. As usual, we look for similar things discussed in the last top ten post. We like pancakes that are already vegan without needing any customising and a choice of flavours is also a bonus.
Back in the day that there weren’t half as many places offering vegan pancakes, Free Bird was always our favourite. Despite all the competing efforts, it still is. They offer a plain pancake with a choice of fruit which can be gluten-free as well as vegan. The best though is the trail mix pancake which is full of oats, seeds, crunchy pieces of nuts and even dark chocolate chips. It’s one very large pancake and it’s thick and filling. It certainly fills you up! You get syrup to pour on top of it if you need it. It’s so big (comparable to a pizza) that most people can’t finish it. I can.
Newer on the scene, Goodsouls offer two different flavours of vegan pancakes, a mango/banana one and a black sesame one which is a bit more grainy and wholesome. These both come more like you’d expect traditional pancakes to be as they are a stack of several smaller cakes rather than one large one. All flavours are fantastic and come with a particularly good whipped coconut cream. They also sell vegan pancakes at their sister restaurant, Reform Kafe.
One of Chiang Mai’s newest vegan restaurants – Asa, added pancakes to their menu fairly recently. They have several varieties including masala chai and trail mix. These are a huge pile of about four or five cakes and they are thick and fluffy not to mention tasty of course. Come hungry as they are very filling, perfect for a post work-out brekkie for those fitness fanatics among us. They come with a side serving of banana and a portion of syrup to pour over them.
This is another old skool place that’s been offering pancakes for years and they’re just as good as they always were. It’s one medium sized pancake and we like the chopped mango and banana you get on top and especially, the pink coconut sauce which is just lovely.
Another recent place, Pure Vegan Heaven offers a set of three smaller pancakes which are uniquely made with sweet potato. They have a delicious taste and come with an equally good peanut/chocolate sauce.
Mild is not a vegetarian or vegan cafe but has extensive vegan options. They offer a number of flavours of vegan pancakes including wholewheat, oat meal, black and white sesame seeds, cinnamon and raisin and our favourite – chocolate and raisin. It’s one, thick, medium sized pancake with maple syrup to pour over it. No extra fruit in it or on top, but it tastes great and we know of no other place that offers a chocolate one. Be sure to request vegan when ordering.
The pancake served here is dark in colour and is made with seeds and wholemeal flour and tastes pretty good. They also serve vegan yoghurt on the side as well as maple syrup. If you prefer your pancakes not so sweet this is probably a good option.
The pancake at Vegan Heaven doesn’t look very inspiring as it’s just one large plain pancake with different fruit options but it is actually better than it looks. It’s tasty, generously sized, filling and comes with a nice syrup to pour over it.
Blue Diamond is very similar to the one they serve at Vegan Heaven but maybe a bit smaller in size and not quite as tasty or satisfying.
At Morning Glory you’ll just get one, small pancake which didn’t fill us up. The chopped up banana and mango (and syrup) was nice to go with it though.
Other places we know of to get a vegan pancake are Juicy4U and Pun Pun – Airport (by request only.) Do you know of somewhere else I haven’t listed? Please let us know!
