Ten Places to get a Vegan Smoothie Bowl
Smoothie bowls make an excellent breakfast or brunch especially in the hot weather. They are usually packed with fruits and often include banana to give a thicker, creamier texture. Unlike a regular drinkable smoothie, they usually contain lavish toppings such as extra chopped fruit pieces or seeds, nuts, coconut shavings etc. They can be extremely healthy, low in fat, easy to whip up and yet can also fill you up easily as well. I am a big smoothie bowl fan. Getting a smoothie bowl was commonplace on the island of Bali when I was there. Now, smoothie bowls seem to be becoming more and more popular everywhere. I eat one almost every morning.
So, where in Chiang Mai can you get a good smoothie bowl? I have listed the places that I know of in this post. If you know of any more, please inform me and I shall add them to the list! Thank you!
1 Trace Hotelistro
This is definitely our top pick. Trace Hotelistro is a small café above Thapae East music venue selling coffees (with vegan milk options) and five smoothie bowls. We first tried these bowls at Bom Bowls in Pai and we were amazed by the quality and taste. The snickers bowl is a divine, smooth, chocolatey and creamy mixture that really does just taste just like a Snickers Bar. The other flavours are no less amazing. Our only regret was that we have to drive four hours up the mountain to try them!
When we heard that Bom Bowls famous bowls were now also being offered by this café in Chiang Mai, you can imagine how thrilled we were. They’re just as good as they are in Pai.
Eat here if: you like a decadent, dessert-like smoothie bowl.

2 Good Souls Kitchen Chiang Mai
Good Souls introduced a breakfast and brunch menu a few months after opening which is available all day. Included are three different smoothie bowls and they are all fabulous. These are a banana cacao, mixed berry or mango passion. They are rich, creamy, smooth, filling and absolutely delicious. They also have granola in them and other toppings and are good value and for the bowl size that you get.
Eat here if: you like a classic, filling, sweet and creamy bowl.

3 Snooze
This smoothie bowl bar has just reopened. It has moved from Thapae Gate to another location near the night market which is in a neighbourhood, it’s easy to find if you just follow Google Maps. They sell only smoothie bowls and only between the hours of 10:00 and 3:00 PM, which they do extremely well. The bowls are all of a good size and they have around five different creative varieties. They all taste fantastic and have a brilliant selection of toppings including things like almonds, puffed millet and coconut shavings. You can add extra toppings for an additional cost. They also have delicious drinkable smoothies too. They are currently operating from the front of their house but will be moving to another permanent location in due course. The owners are very friendly and chatty. They also give you free passion fruit and banana chips! For value, quality and ambiance this is a favourite of ours.
Eat here if: you are after variety, quality and taste.

4 Khun Kae’s Juice Bar
This juice bar has been around for a very long time but it was fairly recently that they started introducing smoothie bowls. All of their juices, smoothies are very healthy and creative and taste great. Their vegan smoothie bowls are definitely the best priced that you’ll find anywhere in Chiang Mai at only 80 BAHT per bowl. They have not compromised in size or taste as they are just as good as some of the other ones that cost twice the price. Although they don’t have any special super food ingredients they still have lots of delicious toppings and are thoroughly enjoyable. The actual restaurant is a little rustic and cramped so if you plan to eat here we suggest not going at lunchtime when it can be too busy to get a table.
Eat here if: you’re looking for value for money.

Free Bird Café introduced two smoothie bowls to their menu a while back. There is a cacao bowl or a spirulina bowl. Both of these are reasonably sized portions and taste very good, the cacao one being our personal favourite. This is the only smoothie bowl offering that we know of that is completely raw. They are probably the healthiest available. We do appreciate the rare superfood ingredients such as cacao although some might say they’re over-priced at around 250 THB per bowl, remember it’s for a good cause as they are a charity.
Eat here if: you like health-promoting superfood smoothie bowls.

6 Fruit Pulse Healthy Juice Bar
Fruit Pulse is not a vegetarian café but they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. They have things like green smoothies and several flavours of smoothie bowls including vegan ones. They are reasonably priced and are quite big bowls with lots of huge, extra pieces of fruit sliced in them. The museli topping makes them filling, too. We found these to be a pretty good option for a fruit bowl in the centre of the city.
Eat here if: you like your smoothie bowls extra fruity.

Pure Vegan Heaven offer two açaí smoothie bowls. Both of them are presented particularly nicely and uniquely. The peanut butter one looks amazing and although I had slightly higher expectations of it from the look – I really enjoy this bowl. The raw peanut butter tastes fantastic although it is not actually all blended through, perhaps this is deliberate though as the taste might be lost. This one is more chocolate-based and the other flavour is more fruit-based. Both are good and I would certainly try them if you want a smoothie bowl that’s a bit different. For me, the uniqueness of these was quite welcome as there are quite a few places that sell smoothie bowls now. At 169 BAHT a bowl, I would not call these cheap but since they use rare ingredients such as açaí I would say that they are sold at a fair price.

8 VAVA Frozen Yoghurt
This expanding chain now has several branches in Chiang Mai. We have yet to visit all of them but believe they are located at Thapae Gate, road to the Night Safari, Central Festival and Maya. Each branch is offering smoothie bowls which are non-dairy. They have interesting flavours such as a cocoa passion. They are reasonably priced but we found that the bowls could have been a bit larger as we found that one bowl did not quite fill us up. We are pleased to see that vegan options like these are hitting the mainstream chains. (Note: Frozen yogurt is their primary offering, they have at least one vegan flavour which is delicious.)
Eat here if: you’re not that hungry.

9 Rustic and Blue
Rustic and Blue are not a vegetarian or vegan restaurant but have been recently adding more and more vegan options to their menu. Their smoothie bowls are mostly all vegan or can be made vegan, the same goes for their smoothies. We have tried the açaí bowl which was of a very high standard. It was a huge portion, tasted great and had lots of extra fruit in it. We are just not quite sure it is all that much better than the one sold at Snooze even though it is almost twice the cost. The bowls are very good but just very over-priced.
Eat here if: you’ve got money to burn.

10 Cube
Cube No 7 has two locations. The original branch is on Siri Mangkalajarn Rd and the second branch which opened recently is at the Night Bazaar. Both of them offer three vegan smoothie bowls. Although the flavours are quite different with mixes of spinach and beetroot, I didn’t find these sweet enough and are a bit too watery. They don’t contain granola but they do contain interesting toppings such as various nuts and even pomegranate seeds.
Eat here if: you like veggies in your smoothie bowls.

Other places to get smoothies that I know of are Amrita Garden, Relief and Bubbles Live. Do you know of another great smoothie bowl place that I haven’t listed? Please let me know!
