Love a wrap/burrito? I’ve never actually known what the difference between is. So this post covers both. Luckily there are lots of places in Chiang Mai that sell these, so here are my top ten faves. As usual, we look for a choice of more than one wrap/burrito, plus ones that are already vegan without needing to be adapted as well as interesting additions/sides/sauces. Here’s the list!
Although Wrap Master is not a vegan or vegetarian restaurant, there are a few reasons why it is our number one pick for a wrap in Chiang Mai. The choices are excellent as they offer a selection of wraps which are already vegan and these are all made up of unique mixes of ingredients that go together so well. These consist of The Earthling, The Forager, The Green Giant and The Burmese Python. They all taste fantastic and it’s hard to pick a favourite. You can of course also just pick your own ingredients and build your own! The options here really do suit everyone. They also have some nice accompaniments such as sweet potato fries or chips and salsa, that’s if you can manage anything else as the wrap is massive.
This place is located in the basement of Maya shopping mall, and the one let down for me was always that you had to eat in the shared area which is not a pleasant place to sit. Then they created their own exclusive sit-in area which makes it much more bearable, however, it’s still inside a mall so it’s not a relaxing place to have a meal. You could always get a take-out if you’re bothered by it. The wraps are more than worth it.
Food4Thought is also not a vegetarian or a vegan restaurant but they have extensive vegan choices. They also have vegan cheese. They offer a broad range of wraps including ones that are already vegan, there are also others you can customise to make vegan using either vegan cheese, tofu or a faux meat made of mushrooms. These are also huge and delicious.
Although the selection at this vegan restaurant is not huge, the falafel wrap is to die for. This literally has to be one of the best wraps we’ve ever tasted. It’s humungous in size, has the tastiest falafel filling and comes with a delicious cashew cream sauce on the side. They also have a breakfast burrito and some other variations but the falafel wrap will always be our favourite.
Goodsouls has a good range of wraps as they offer 3 interesting and creative fillings. These are potato and mushroom, eggplant and hummus and then perhaps the most unique – massaman and brown rice. It might sound weird but it works very well! As they all do. These are all satisfying portions as it is but if you need to you could add some of their amazing popular potato wedges, or of course anything else from their wide selection of fully vegan choices.
Salsa Kitchen is a classic Mexican restaurant that has been around for as long as we can remember. We have always loved their dishes, but a few years ago they upped their game massively when they started making their own vegan cheese. They are one of the only places that make their own cheese and don’t just order from Chiang Mai Bread. I don’t know how they make it but it’s amazing. You can order vegan cheese in many of their dishes such as the chimichanga and of course their bean burrito. We love the fact that it’s huge, tasty, doesn’t sound need customizing and can be jazzed up with sides such as chips and salsa or even nachos with more vegan cheese. Although they only have one on offer, it’s a deliciously classic burrito that cannot be faulted.
Ole is another Mexican restaurant that offers some great dishes. They offer a specifically labelled vegan burrito which comes in either a regular or a large size, they are both big enough. We particularly like that it is cooked without oil. It tastes good but without any vegan cheese it isn’t as heavenly as Salsa Kitchen. One thing we really appreciate about Ole is that they offer their vegan burritos at a reduced price from those with meat/cheese, it makes perfect sense but so many restaurants do not do this.
The airport branch of Pun Pun is not strictly vegetarian like the other branch at Wat Suan Dok but the advantage is that they do have a few additional items, such as their two burritos. They offer either a black bean burrito or a Greek hummus burrito. You will have to ask to omit the cheese and dairy. They don’t need them, the hummus/black bean and rice and veggies are enough for them to taste great and a bargain at only about 80 BAHT each.
Cat House only offers one burrito and it will need customising as it normally comes with cheese which you will have to ask to be omitted. It is very different to all the others in this list. It is served on a plate and has a sauce poured over it and will need to be eaten with a knife and fork. It is particularly unique though as it unusually made with lentils and is enjoyable.
Vegan Heaven does a couple of wraps such as a hummus and salad. We love that of course these come from a fully vegan restaurant but they are rather on the small side and we have found that they often skimp out on the fillings.
I don’t really have anything good to say about the wraps here. They only had one that was actually labelled vegan and I couldn’t see anything interesting or with sustenance to add to it such as hummus. My wrap was basically just plain veggies so I found it incredibly boring. They did at least have a choice of labelled vegan sauces, I went for tamarind which was OK. However, the worst thing was the way that as soon as I picked it up the whole thing fell apart in my hands so I was basically left with a salad on two halves of a tortilla. It was also over-priced. Now you know why it’s last on my list!
Where is your favourite place to get a burrito? Do you agree with my favourites? Do you know another great place to get a vegan burrito that I haven’t listed? Please let me know!
Thanks for the post! There’s a burrito van at Mae Hia market, I think on weekdays before 2pm, can make a vegan burrito as well, pretty okay: https://www.facebook.com/borderrunchiangmai/
