Where can I find the best vegan cake in Chiang Mai? This is a question that I hear often. There used to be only a couple of places in Chiang Mai to buy them but there is now a wide range of veggie and veggie-friendly cafés offering lots of different types of vegan cakes. Here are ten of them!
1. Blue Diamond the Breakfast Club
Although Blue Diamond is not a vegan or even a vegetarian restaurant, it is very popular with veggies because of the extensive, quality, vegan food that they sell. They are most famous for the unique and impressive selection of vegan sweet treats they have which includes everything from things like apple pie, cinnamon rolls, vegan cheesecake, brownies, chocolates, cookies, soy ice-cream and more. Pretty much every sweet treat that you can think of has a vegan version of it sold here. Although they are not all vegan, they are clearly indicated which are vegan, raw-vegan or gluten-free. All of these are very reasonably priced with most items being under 100 BAHT.
Alchemy vegan usually has around 3 different vegan cakes on offer. These will vary but could include decadent chocolate, butter peach, carrot cake, coconut caramel or whatever else the owner has decided to experiment with. Whilst the selection is not huge, these are absolutely some of the best tasting cakes you will find in Chiang Mai. They are everything you can expect a cake to be, moist, creamy, sweet, decadent and delicious. Probably not the healthiest but who wants to be healthy when we order a cake? I don’t know about you, but I always want a sweet tasting treat when I order a cake and that’s exactly what these are. We also like the fact that the selections rotate so you can always expect to find something unique. The owner will also make a whole vegan cake on request.
Da’s Home Bakery is situated next to Blue Diamond’s additional health shop, near Sompet market. Although their menu is not particularly vegan-friendly, their vegan sweet treat collection is pretty much a slightly smaller but very similar version to what they sell at Blue Diamond. They have clearly marked vegan cakes, muffins, cookies, buns, croissants etc. Their vegan chocolate mousse is also particularly popular.
4. Goodsouls Kitchen Chiang Mai
Goodsouls always has fairly wide selection of around five or six cakes available and these are of course all vegan. Two of them are usually raw. These usually include a chocolate cake, a carrot cake, raw mango cheesecake and raw coconut cheesecake. These are good value at around 90 BAHT particularly as the slices are cut large and are enough to share. These cakes tend to have mixed reviews, as they aren’t as rich and sweet as some people like. I like all of them especially the raw cheesecakes, which are unusual. These cakes are unique to Goodsouls. They also have vegan ice-cream and raw energy balls.
The London Tea Room is a guest house and tea and coffee shop situated in the Nimman area. They have a particularly good range of vegan hot drinks and I have previously written about them here. I have also talked about their impressive cake selection which are all homemade by the owner. They always have at least one vegan cake and on certain days they will have only vegan cakes. They often include a raw one. The cakes are well-made, taste great and use quality ingredients. Prices are a little higher at around 120 BAHT. Can make you one large vegan cake if requested.
Pink House Garden make their own cakes and pay particular attention to cooking gluten-free and vegan. They usually have a couple of vegan cakes and they are creative, delicious and made in-house so exclusive to their restaurant.
Amrita Garden has quite a few homemade cakes which are mostly all vegan. There are only about one or two which contain dairy. These usually vary depending on what the owners have made, so you’re guaranteed to find something unique and creative.
8. Vegan Heaven
I have previously raved about one of the fantastic items you can get at either Vegan Heaven, Rad Rabbit or Taste from Heaven which is their divine, chewy, gooey, amazing chocolate brownie. It is one of the best I’ve tasted and is superb value at only 60 BAHT, especially given the massive size of it. Can be served with a few flavours of vegan ice-cream.
9. Cat House
Cat House is a veggie-friendly restaurant with extensive vegan options and more recently they have been getting more and more cakes in, about half of which are vegan. These include things like a chocolate fudge brownie, a chocolate cake and a carrot cake. The cakes are made by The Dorm Bakery who supply to a few other places around town.
10. Food 4 Thought
Food 4 Thought has a range of cakes that typically includes at least one or two vegan cakes as well as cookies. The orange cake is fantastic.
Other places I know of to get vegan cakes are Imm Aim Vegetarian and Bike Café, Free Bird Cafe, Pure Vegan Heaven, Pun Pun, Rustic and Blue, Anchan, Biscotti House and The Falafelist. Some Thai style jey stores will also have the odd vegan cake but it’s best to absolutely check that they’re vegan.
