Koh Chang is the second largest island in Thailand and is a popular holiday destination given its beautiful beaches and its ease of access from Bangkok. It is fairly quiet during the low season, April-October. Given the size of the island I was quite surprised that there are not more vegan and vegan friendly restaurants and I wouldn’t recommend it as a vegan-friendly island but if you are coming here anyway there are a few places that will serve your needs.
There are no fully vegan restaurants on the island at all, two vegetarian restaurants in the Kai Bae area and another one near White Sands. Otherwise, you will need to seek out the vegan-friendly places. Here is a summary of what you’ll find as a vegan in Koh Chang.
This place is located just outside of Kai Bae and is definitely our favourite restaurant on the island. Although it’s not fully vegan it clearly states on the pictures in the menu which dishes are vegan, which is actually most of them. They offer a number of tasty, well portioned Thai dishes as well as some vegan western dishes which is fairly unusual to find on the island. They also have some great breakfast dishes such as smoothie bowls. The location is nothing special but the prices here are notably cheap as Koh Chang is fairly expensive especially compared to Chiang Mai. The prices here are way lower than all of the proceeding venues.
This is a rather modern and plush café set in a lush garden location also not far from Kai Bae. The location is definitely what makes the place as the prices are otherwise quite high especially for the portion size that you get. The menu is not huge but the exciting part of the menu is the inclusion of vegan cheese which is so unusual in Thailand, even in Chiang Mai. We believe the cheese is homemade as we haven’t seen it anywhere else on Koh Chang. Dishes which are vegan or can be made vegan are marked on the menu although it’s not obvious at first, they have a star next to them. They have an interesting range of plant-based milks including pistachio and the almond milk banana smoothie is particularly good.
This dairy free café at first looks like it’s vegetarian so it was a bit disappointing to find a couple of chicken and fish dishes within the menu. They do however offer a huge range of vegan items including a selection of smoothie bowls and a wide choice of vegan ice-cream. It is located in White Sands beach, not far from the pier.
We discovered this spot by accident as I stayed on Klong Kloi beach which is a very short distance from this place. Anyone who knows me knows my love for smoothie bowls so when I saw the sign advertising them I was drawn in. Although they don’t clearly mark them as vegan they don’t actually contain milk and they have plant milk available anyway. Just be sure to request no honey. Their smoothies are equally good. They are quite expensive but the location is idyllic as they are located literally right on the beach. Have a swim after your breakfast!
This Thai restaurant is located at Bang Bao pier near Klong Kloi beach, not the main pier. Although it is just regular Thai food it is one of the only restaurants we found in this particular area that actually advertises that they have vegan food. They seemed to have good understanding and they offer tofu as an option for almost all dishes.
This small ice-cream stand is also on Bang Bao pier. They have three vegan gelato options which are mango, lemon and blueberry and are kept at the far left side so they can be identified easily from the dairy flavours.
At the time of visiting this vegetarian restaurant at White Sands was temporarily closed. They have now re-opened and offer a large array of interesting looking marked vegan dishes such as a tempeh salad, a range of vegan burgers and nice cream bowls.
